Kenya: 66,000 low-income households to benefit from electricity connections
In October, GPOBA signed a grant agreement of US$5.24 million with the Kenya Power and Lighting Company to increase access to electricity for low-income households using an output-based aid approach. The project will subsidize connections to the electricity grid for around 66,000 households (roughly 265,000 people) in Kenya’s largest slum, Kibera (Nairobi), and informal settlements in the Western, Central, and Coast Provinces. Lesotho: Hospital Public-Private Partnership Heralds a New Era for Health Care Delivery
On October 21, Lesotho's King Letsie III officially opened the new Queen 'Mamohato Memorial Hospital, part of an innovative public-private partnership scheme. The partners for the scheme are the Government of Lesotho, Tsepong Consortium, IFC Advisory Services, the World Bank, and GPOBA. The project aims to create a lasting solution to the daunting challenges facing Lesotho's health sector: high poverty levels, low life expectancy, and the third highest HIV prevalence rate--23 percent for ages 15-49. The new referral hospital, along with three filter clinics, will help ease the burden on Lesotho's health sector and improve access to health care for about half-a-million Basotho.
