Morocco: Extending Water Service to the Poor in Urban and Rural Areas
Two new OBApproaches papers in English and French present the design and initial results of Morocco’s output-based aid (OBA) pilots in the water sector. OBApproaches no. 25 highlights efforts to extend water services to the poor in peri-urban areas of Tangiers, Casablanca and Meknes. OBApproaches no. 26 presents a scheme to expand water supply service in small towns and rural areas of Morocco.

Extending Telecommunications in Rural Indonesia

This project will provide Internet access, telecommunications, computer facilities and internet-based training for communities in disadvantaged rural areas of Java and Sumatra, Indonesia. Approximately 10 million users, including students, rural women, farmers, health workers, teachers, and villagers will benefit from this project.

Mumbai, India: Electricity connections
This scheme will subsidize part of the costs of electricity connection and wiring for inhabitants of the Shivajinagar slum in Mumbai, India. Up to 26,000 slum households or approximately 104,000 slum dwellers are expected to eventually benefit from either new electricity connections or regularization of existing connections.

Output-Based Aid in Ethiopia: Dealing with the "Last Mile" Paradox in Rural Electrification? (June 2009)

Providing electricity to poor households in rural areas in Ethiopia is critical to improving the health and living conditions of the population, reducing poverty, and stimulating growth. A project supported by GPOBA is accelerating the pace of connections in electrified areas and fostering energy efficiency by providing two compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) to poor households as part of the connection package.

UK to Contribute GBP 37 million to GPOBA
The UK's Department for International Development (DFID) has pledged an additional GBP 37 million (approximately US$60 million) to GPOBA to support the program’s efforts to improve delivery of basic services to the poor in developing countries. Read more >>

Training Workshop on OBA for World Bank Group Staff
GPOBA held a training workshop on April 28-29 on the use of OBA approaches to improve delivery of basic services to the poor. The course was attended by 17 World Bank Group task team leaders. Read more >>

New TTL for Honduras Project

Manuel Schiffler, task team leader for the Honduras Water and Sanitation Services project , is moving to KfW, the German development bank, where he will handle global knowledge management, quality enhancement, and partnerships in the water sector. We wish Manuel well and welcome Sylvie Debomy as the new TTL for the Honduras project.

Uganda Hosts First OBA Training Workshop in the Field
The World Bank's office in Kampala, Uganda hosted an introductory training workshop on output-based aid (OBA) for World Bank staff and donors on June 18, 2009. The course was taught by subject matter experts from the World Bank and from two GPOBA project partners in Uganda: Marie Stopes International and the Department of Water Development at the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Environment. The Global Partnership on Output-Based Aid (GPOBA) is a global partnership, initially established as a multi-donor trust fund, which aims to fund, design, demonstrate and document OBA approaches to support the sustainable delivery of basic services to those least able to afford them and to those currently without access.
