| Activity Objectives: | In rural Egypt, insufficient sewerage connections and a lack of wastewater treatment pose health and environmental hazards (often through seepage from domestic sewage tanks into household building fabric). The practice of dumping untreated waste into water drains when septic tanks are evacuated also leads to the contamination of drinking water sources and agricultural land. In response to this situation, the Government of Egypt is keen to increase the number of sewage connections to cover 100% of the population by 2027. |

| Development Impact: | GPOBA’s Technical Assistance funding will help the Government to investigate and design an effective OBA scheme to assist in service expansion. |
|||
| GPOBA's role: | The initial phase of the GPOBA Technical Assistance will determine the size of the target market and the suitability of an OBA scheme based on linking performance based management contracts to OBA subsidies. An assessment of the Holding Company’s capacity to undertake fiduciary responsibilities as per the World Bank procurement guidelines will also be undertaken. The Procurement of a service provider will be done in the second phase. |
