| Activity Objectives: | The OBA scheme aims to help state-owned national utility EEPCo finance the cost of connection to electricity services for poor customers in rural areas. |
| Project Update: | A Grant Agreement was signed on October 30, 2008. |
| Development Impact: | Lack of access to finance is a barrier to including poor costumers in the current rural access expansion efforts. The one-off subsidy funded by the GPOBA grant will pay for: the financing costs to provide a 5 year loan to poor strata of the population who get connected to the electricity grid; and the delivery of two energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Lamps, (CFLs), to promote energy conservation and help the customers reduce their electricity bills. 228,571 households are expected to gain access to electricity services through the scheme. |
| GPOBA's role: | GPOBA will subsidize the financing costs of loans to make connections more affordable and to accelerate the pace of direct connections among the poorest households. |
