| Activity Objectives: | The objective of this project is to use an output based aid (OBA) approach to encourage expansion of the Kenyan electricity grid into slum areas. Kenya is one of the fastest urbanizing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and incidence of urban poverty has been on rise. Slum dwellers’ access to basic services such as water, sanitation, electricity, and transportation is very poor. The local utility, Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) would like to increase connection in slum areas in order to meet targets for new connections, reduce theft and vandalism, and raise quality of life in the slums. |
| Project Update: | A grant agreement between KPLC and GPOBA was signed, in Nairobi on October 24, 2011. |
| Development Impact: | The project aims to provide approximately 50,000 new electricity connections in slum settlements in Kenya. |
| GPOBA's role: | GPOBA will pay subsidies to cover part of the cost of connection to the electricity grid for target households. |
