Mozambique Water Private Sector Contracts – OBA for coverage expansion

Country   (and Region): Mozambique  (Africa)
Sector(s): Water and Sanitation
Activity Objectives:

The objective of the project is to provide subsidized water connections for domestic consumers in Maputo, Beira, Nampula, Quelimane, and Pemba. This will facilitate access for low- to –middle-income households that currently do not have access to piped water. The World Bank financed National Water Development Project II (NWDP II) began implementation in 2000 and concentrated on considerable investments in improving the production capacity of water systems. Capital investments have now secured a supply of potable water in sufficient quantity to dramatically increase their service coverage. However, the high cost of getting an individual household connection represents a major barrier for low- and middle-income households. Several donors and facilities, including the World Bank, the Africa Catalytic Growth Fund, the EIB and WaterAid will help develop secondary and tertiary networks in the five cities, and a GPOBA subsidy would enable the poorer households to afford access to the network.

Project Update:

The Grant Agreement  was signed on April 3, 2008. Up to June 30, 2010, the number of people verified to have benefited from this project so far stands at 8,568.

Development Impact:

This project will construct 30,000 shared yard taps which will impact approximately 468,000 people.
