Improved Rural Community Water in Andhra Pradesh

Activity Objectives:

The objective of the project was to provide safe drinking water to poor population of the coastal area of Andhra Pradesh through, inter-alia, development of approximately 25 community supply water schemes for the purpose of benefiting about 75000 poor people in various districts of Andhra Pradesh. The Project consists of the following parts:

1. Constructing, Installing, Commissioning and Operating Community Supply Water Schemes ("CSWSs"): Consisting of ultraviolet (UV) filter water plants and storage tanks, registering households to CSWSs, operating CSWSs and verifying usage of CSWSs, in approximately 25 villages in Krishna, Guntur and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh.

2. Promotion and Awareness on Safe Drinking Water: Undertaking campaigns and developing and implementing IEC strategies for the purpose of, inter-alia, educating rural communities in Andhra Pradesh on the benefits of safe drinking water and promoting the use of treated water fi-om CSWSs.

3. Engaging the services of a consultant(s) for carrying out, inter alia, technical verification, evaluation and monitoring of activities and outputs of Parts 1 and 2 of the Project.

Project Update:

This project closed on December 31, 2009 and successfully improved the quality of drinking water for 77,878 poor people living in 25 villages of Andhra Pradesh

Development Impact:

This project will subsidize 25 treatment facilities in poor villages that currently lack access to clean drinking water.

GPOBA's role:

GPOBA will provide subsidy funding for all 25 new UV treatment facilities. As well as funds for project monitoring and output verification.
