Expansion of Water Services in Low income areas of Jakarta

Country   (and Region): Indonesia  (East Asia and Pacific)
Sector(s): Water and Sanitation
Activity Objectives:

The proposed pilot project aims to test an output-based approach for connecting a selected low income urban area in Jakarta. Despite having one of Asia’s more efficient water utility systems, network growth in Jakarta is far too slow to make a significant impact on low access rates among the poor. Low income communities in Jakarta often consume contaminated ground water from shallow wells or pay exorbitant fees to informal water carriers. It has been estimated that the poorest, unconnected households currently spend 15% or more of their household income on water.

Project Update:

A Grant Agreement was signed on November 1, 2007.

Development Impact:

This project will bring access to water services to an estimated 11,630 households.

GPOBA's role:

A GPOBA grant will fund one-off connection subsides to poor households.
