Solar PV Systems to Increase Access to Electricity Services in Ghana

Country   (and Region): Ghana  (Africa)
Sector(s): Energy
Activity Objectives:

This project will aim at providing people in rural areas of Ghana with access to electricity services by subsidizing installations of off-grid solar photovoltaic systems. The "dealer model" used to implement this project promotes free market entry and competition between rival firms and seeks to increase the number of solar home system dealers operating in Ghana.

Project Update:

Grant Agreement Signed on October 10, 2008.

Development Impact:

Upon commitment of subsidy funding, this project expects to bring electricity services to 15,000 households.

GPOBA's role:

GPOBA has already provided Technical Assistance to aid in designing this project and is working toward funding partial installation subsidies. It is hoped that this project will test the viability of using household solar systems to support electrification efforts throughout rural Ghana.
